About the Project
Description
More than 30 years after its initial publication, I have reimagined the book “Beatles,” giving it a contemporary and updated appearance suitable for 2020.
Duration: 3 weeks
Method: Research, moodboard, persona, target audience, style board, sketches, layout
Tools: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign
Client: School assignment
Context
Brief: In this assignment, I was tasked with redesigning the book “Beatles” by the Norwegian author Lars Saabye Christensen. This involved creating a new book cover and formatting the interior content. The cover should be based on an idea, emotion, and/or atmosphere from the book’s content, and designed for 2020 and beyond. The content of the book should consist of a dust jacket, title page, colophon, table of contents, chapter opening spreads, and a minimum of 5 pages of continuous text laid out with column titles and pagination.
Problem: How can I convey the content and genre of the book to a specific target audience through the use of typography and visual elements?
Solution: I conceived a visually impactful book cover that captures the trauma and insecurity of the main character on the front page, while delicately alluding to the book’s themes through my adept use of color and design. Through meticulous research, I formulated a page layout that harmoniously resonates with the book’s genre.
Learning: From the book design project, I obtained valuable insights into the intricate art of translating a narrative’s emotions onto a visually compelling book cover. I learned to convey themes subtly yet effectively through color and design choices, while also recognizing the importance of research in creating layouts that resonate with the book’s genre.
